Beautiful New Logo

Our shop donates part of our profits to charity in memory of my dad, Roger S. Knudson, so we have a logo for our giving foundation. We recently donated to the 2015 Minnesota MS 150. It's my brother's 5th year doing the MS 150 and he's a team co-captain. They ride in memory of his friend's father from Duluth MN to Minneapolis MN.

Leprosy, Not Just a Biblical Problem
As World Leprosy Day approaches on Sunday, January 25, we thought it fitting to bring one of the world’s oldest known diseases to light.
World Leprosy Day helps to focus on the needs of some of the
poorest and most marginalized people in the world – those affected by leprosy.
It helps to tell the story to people who do not know that leprosy still exists
and that it can now be cured. It also helps raise funds so that those with
leprosy can be cured and cared for.
Spread the word that every two minutes someone is diagnosed with leprosy.
Even though it is curable, many people with Leprosy and Buruli ulcer are stigmatized and shunned from their communities – at times comparable to that of biblical times.
Prevalent in India and Brazil !! There is a cure and in Brazil a simple blood test to detected it !!
“Every two minutes someone is diagnosed with leprosy,” says
American Leprosy Missions President and CEO Bill Simmons. “For more than 100
years, American Leprosy Missions has been working to cure leprosy, care for
those damaged by the disease and ultimately bring an end to leprosy.
Each year, World Leprosy Day is a time to pause and be thankful for the many people who have been cured of leprosy. But it is also a time to remember the thousands of people who will contract leprosy this year and the millions who suffer from disabilities caused by this terrible disease. We must not forget, that in many parts of the world, leprosy is still a public health problem. So we encourage everyone to join us in observing World Leprosy Day.”

But the mammals are pretty tough when they roll into a
protective ball, which is why Brazil picked a Brazilian three-banded armadillo
named Fuleco as the mascot for the 2014 World Cup.
A Legacy of Leprosy
Different though we may seem, humans and armadillos share an
unfortunate similarity—we’re the only animals that can naturally contract
Hansen’s disease, better known as leprosy.
Leprosy is caused by the Mycobacterium leprae bacterium.
This nasty bug prefers slightly cooler temperatures, which is why in humans it
causes serious damage to the extremities. Unfortunately for our armored
friends, armadillos tend to have a lower core body temperature than most
mammals. This means the bacterium is free to go crazy throughout their body
cavity, eventually causing organ failure and death.
“But in order to contract leprosy from an armadillo,” said
Loughry, “I always tell people you really have to want to, because it’s not
easy to get it.”
In other words, unless you butcher an armadillo while you
have open wounds on your hands, you’re unlikely to catch leprosy from one of
these animals.
If only the same were true for the armadillos. By sequencing
the bacterium’s genome, scientists have determined that leprosy didn’t exist in
the New World until Europeans arrived.
Surprisingly Brazil has a larger problem with Hansen's disease than India based on population - even with a early detection test and a cure.

The reason I enjoyed seeing this statue is because I'm an advocate for ending Hansen's disease (leprosy). It's still alive and well in Brazil and India and many other countries. There is a cure, and a blood test for early detection in Brazil, and they are now working on a vaccine. More to come later -- helping end one of the world's oldest known diseases!
The
Father Damien Statue, also called the Saint Damien of Molokaʻi Statue, is the
centerpiece of the entrance to the Hawaiʻi State Capitol and the Hawaiʻi State
Legislature in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. A second bronze cast is displayed in the
National Statuary Hall Collection in the United States Capitol along with the
Kamehameha Statue. The landmark memorializes the famous Hawaiʻi Catholic Church
priest from Belgium who sacrificed his life for the lepers of the island of
Molokaʻi. Father Damien is considered one of the preeminent heroes of Hawaiʻi,
and was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on October 11, 2009. Cast in bronze, the
statue depicts Father Damien in his later years after being diagnosed with the
disease of those he attended.

National Military Appreciation Month
National Military Appreciation Month started as a simple idea; to gather America around its military family to honor, remember, recognize and appreciate those who have served and those now serving and to know the history behind it all. This idea was then legislated twice to achieve greater national attention and recognition.
Most intriguing to National Military Appreciation Month success is that it's built from the ground up by a handful of volunteers with genuine desire to build public patriotism, awareness and support for our troops and veterans.
Because most holidays commemorating historical military events have become little more than three-day weekends lacking focus on their original purpose, this month is needed to remind us of the sacrifices and the history we as Americans have been privileged to participate in throughout the past 230 years.
As a nation, we observe and participate in various national cultural and social awareness events through mass media attention and educational curriculum. However, we have not allocated appropriate recognition of the most important presence in the world today, an entity that impacts each and every American in a significant way, the Armed Forces of the United States of America.

The "Throw Up" Kitty Creamer
The famous "throw up" kitty in our family. Almost all of the siblings has one I believe. When we grew up we only had hot cereal for breakfast, like oatmeal or Malt 'O Meal, etc. (One of my sisters and I didn't know about cold cereal until we started school). Milk went in the kitty cream pitcher and we'd pretend the kitty was throwing up on our cereal ! Obviously we were easily amused -- but so are our own kids!
This one can be found at See Dolly Run at Etsy for $32, a very good price, and what a great way to make breakfast a fun time for your kids - my nieces are loving their throw up kitty joining them for breakfast with oatmeal.

Because I'm a HUGE Nancy Drew fan, I must point out that she also has two vintage Nancy Drew books in her shop. Personally I'm glad I grew up with Nancy Drew and not the Twilight type books that are popular now - now sure why.
